The basics

What is an Instagram Video Downloader?

An Instagram video downloader is a simple web tool that saves a video from Instagram to your own phone or computer. Instagram lets you watch videos inside the app, but it does not give you a button to keep a real copy of the file. Its “Save” button only adds the post to a list inside Instagram. If the creator deletes the post, or you have no internet, that saved post is gone.

Insta Video Download solves this in a clear and simple way. You copy the link of a public video, paste it into the box at the top of this page and press Download. Our tool finds the video file that Instagram already shows to everyone, and your browser saves it as an MP4 file. The file then works like any other video on your device. You can watch it offline, move it to another folder or keep it as a backup.

Who is it for?

Many different people use a video downloader for good reasons:

  • Creators who want a backup of their own videos, in case they lose their account or their phone.
  • Students and learners who want to watch a tutorial, recipe or workout again without the internet.
  • Teachers and trainers who need to show a short clip in a classroom with poor Wi-Fi.
  • Families and friends who want to keep a public video of a special event that someone shared with them.
  • Social media teams who keep copies of their own brand videos for reports and planning.

The tool only works with videos that are publicly visible. It is meant for offline viewing and for saving content that you own or have permission to keep. It does not unlock private accounts, and it never asks for your Instagram password.

Key features

What the tool can do for you

We only list features the tool really has. No tricks, no fake promises.

Works online, nothing to install

The downloader runs in your web browser. You don’t need an app, a browser extension or any extra software.

Phone, tablet and computer

Use it on Android phones, iPhones, iPads, Windows PCs, Macs and Chromebooks. The page adjusts to any screen size.

Simple link-based steps

Copy a link, paste it, press Download. That is the whole process. There are no forms to fill and no confusing menus.

Public video posts

Save videos from public Instagram posts — the normal video posts you see in the feed and on profile pages.

MP4 files

Videos are saved as MP4, the most common video format. MP4 plays on almost every phone, computer, TV and video editor.

Reels links work too

You can paste a Reel link here, or use our dedicated Reels Downloader, which is made just for Reels.

No sign-up

You don’t create an account or give your e-mail address. You can start using the tool straight away.

Free to use

The tool is free. To keep it fast for everyone, very quick repeated requests are slowed down for a short time.

No Instagram login

We never ask for your Instagram username or password, and the download does not use your Instagram account.

Step by step

How to download Instagram videos

It takes less than a minute. Follow these six easy steps.

  1. Open Instagram and find the video

Open the Instagram app or instagram.com and go to the video post you want to save.

  2. Copy the video’s share link

Tap the three dots (⋯) or the share icon on the post and choose Copy link. On a computer you can also copy the address from the browser bar.

  3. Open the downloader tool

Come back to this page in any browser. The download box is at the very top.

  4. Paste the URL into the box

Tap the box and paste the link. You can also press the Paste button, which reads the link from your clipboard if your browser allows it.

  5. Press Download and wait

Press Download. The tool checks the link and prepares the video. This usually takes a few seconds.

  6. Save the video to your device

When the preview appears, press the download button under it. Your browser saves the MP4 file to your device.

The names of buttons in Instagram can change between app versions, languages and devices. You may see “Share”, a paper-plane icon or three dots (⋯) instead of the exact words above. Whether a video can be saved also depends on the post being public and on what our download service can access at that moment.

Supported content

What kind of Instagram videos can you download?

Here is an honest list of what works with this tool, what works only sometimes, and what does not work at all.

  • Public video posts Supported

Videos posted in the feed by public accounts, with links that contain /p/. Older IGTV links with /tv/ usually work too.

  • Instagram Reels Supported

Public Reels (links with /reel/) work here. Our Reels Downloader page gives the same result with Reel-specific help.

  • Carousel posts that contain videos Conditional

A carousel can mix photos and videos. For mixed posts this tool usually returns the first video. Other slides may not be included.

  • Stories and Highlights Conditional

Stories have their own Story Downloader, which works only while a public Story is live (about 24 hours). Highlights are handled by a separate Highlights tool when it is turned on for this site.

  • Videos from private accounts Not supported

Private videos cannot be downloaded. The tool only sees what anyone can see without logging in, and we will never ask for your login to get around this.

  • Deleted, archived or restricted posts Not supported

If a post was removed, archived or limited by Instagram (for example for age reasons), it is not available to download.

Device guides

How to download Instagram videos on different devices

The tool is the same everywhere, but each device saves files in its own way.

Android phones

Use Chrome, Samsung Internet, Firefox or another browser. After you press download, the file usually goes to the Downloads folder.

Open the Files or My Files app and look in Downloads. Many phones also show the video in the Gallery or Google Photos after a short time.

iPhone and iPad

Use Safari (iOS 13 or newer). When you press download, Safari may ask if you want to download the file — tap Download.

The video is saved in the Files app, in the Downloads folder. To move it to the Photos app, open it in Files, tap the share icon and choose Save Video.

Windows computers

Chrome, Edge and Firefox save the MP4 to your Downloads folder by default. You can open it from the browser’s download list.

The file plays in the Windows Media Player, the Films & TV app or VLC, and it can be used in most video editors.

Mac computers

Safari, Chrome and Firefox save the file to the Downloads folder. You can also find it in the downloads list in your browser.

MP4 files open in QuickTime Player and can be imported into iMovie or Photos.

Browsers and phone systems update often, so menus and folder names may look a little different on your device.

Quality and formats

Video quality and file formats

Format: videos are saved as MP4 files. MP4 uses common video and audio codecs, so it plays on nearly every device without extra apps.

Resolution: you get the best version that Instagram makes available for that post. For most videos this is 720p or 1080p. Sometimes the tool also offers a second, smaller version, which is useful if you want to save storage space. The exact choices depend on what Instagram and our download service return for that video.

Original quality limits: Instagram compresses every video when it is uploaded. That means the downloaded file can never be better than the version Instagram keeps. If a creator uploaded a blurry or dark video, the download will look the same. We do not upscale, sharpen or re-encode the file, and we do not add a watermark.

File size: a one-minute video in 1080p is often between 5 MB and 25 MB. Longer and sharper videos are bigger. If your phone is low on space, choose the smaller version when it is offered.

Troubleshooting

Problems and solutions

Most problems are easy to fix. Try these steps. If a video still does not work, it may not be available to download.

  • Invalid Instagram URLMake sure the link starts with https://www.instagram.com/ and points to the post itself. Copy it again using Copy link instead of typing it.
  • Download button does not respondRefresh the page and try again. Check that JavaScript is turned on and that an ad blocker or privacy extension is not blocking the page.
  • Private or unavailable contentOpen the link in a private browser window. If you see a login page or “Sorry, this page isn’t available”, the video is private or removed and can’t be saved.
  • Video does not loadWait a minute and try again. Instagram or our download service may be busy. Very fast repeated tries are also slowed down for a short time.
  • Unsupported post typeStories, profiles and photos have their own tools. Use the Story Downloader, Photo Downloader or Profile Picture Downloader for those links.
  • Poor video qualityThe file can only be as good as Instagram’s copy. If two versions are offered, pick the first (largest) one.
  • Downloaded file is not showingLook in the Downloads folder or the Files app. On iPhone, move the video to Photos using Save Video from the Files app.
  • Browser or network problemsTry a different browser, update your current one or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. A slow connection can make large videos take longer.
Privacy and security

What happens to your link and your data?

We want you to know exactly what happens when you use the tool:

  • Your link: when you press Download, the link is sent to our server and then to the download service we use to find the video. We do not keep a history of the links you paste.
  • The result: details about the video (such as the file address and caption) are kept in a short-term cache for about 5 minute(s) so repeated requests are faster. Then they are removed.
  • The video file: when you save a video, it passes through our server to your browser. We do not store the video.
  • Recent downloads: the “Recent downloads” list is saved only in your own browser. You can clear it at any time.
  • Your account: we never ask for your Instagram login and do not need any personal details to use the tool.

We use basic, privacy-friendly statistics and normal security measures to keep the site running. For full details, including cookies and how long data is kept, please read our Privacy Policy.

Responsible use

Respect copyright and creators

Every video on Instagram belongs to the person or brand that made it. Downloading a video does not give you the right to re-upload it, sell it or use it in your own content. Please follow these simple rules:

  • Download videos that you made yourself, or that the owner allows you to save.
  • Ask for permission before you share or reuse someone else’s video, and give credit.
  • Follow Instagram’s terms of use and the copyright laws in your country.
