The basics

What is an Instagram Story Downloader?

Instagram Stories are full-screen photos and short videos that disappear 24 hours after they are posted. Accounts use them for daily updates, event news, special offers, quick tips and behind-the-scenes moments. Because they vanish so fast, it is easy to miss something you wanted to look at again.

An Instagram Story downloader saves a single Story from a public account while it is still live. You copy the link of the Story, paste it on this page and press Download. Insta Video Download finds the photo or video and your browser saves it as a file. Photo Stories become JPG images and video Stories become MP4 videos.

Who uses a Story downloader?

  • Story creators who forgot to save their own Story before it expired.
  • Shoppers who want to keep a discount code, price list or opening hours shared in a Story.
  • Event visitors who want the schedule or map that an organiser posted.
  • Learners who want to keep a quick tip or how-to shared in a Story.

The tool only works with public Stories that are still online. People post Stories expecting them to disappear, so please think before you save or share them.

Step by step

How to download Instagram Stories

Do it while the Story is still live.

  1. Open the Story

In Instagram, tap the profile picture with the colourful ring to watch the Story.

  2. Copy the Story link

While the Story is on screen, tap the three dots (⋯) or the paper-plane icon and choose Copy link.

  3. Open this downloader

Switch to your browser and open this page.

  4. Paste the link

Paste the link into the box at the top. It looks like instagram.com/stories/username/123….

  5. Press Download

Press Download and wait a few seconds.

  6. Save the file

Press the download button under the preview to save the photo or video.

In some app versions the option is under the three dots (⋯), in others under the paper-plane icon. Some accounts turn off sharing, which hides the link option. The Story must be public and still online.

Supported content

Which Stories can be downloaded?

Stories have more limits than normal posts. Here is the honest picture.

  • Live Stories from public accounts Supported

Photo and video Stories that are still online and come from public accounts.

  • Story Highlights Conditional

Highlights stay on a profile after 24 hours. They are handled by the separate Highlights tool when it is turned on for this site.

  • Expired Stories Not supported

Once Instagram removes a Story (after about 24 hours), it can no longer be downloaded — unless it was added to a Highlight.

  • Close Friends Stories Not supported

These are shared with a private list, so they are not public.

  • Stories from private accounts Not supported

Private Stories need a login to view and can’t be downloaded.

  • Live broadcasts Not supported

Instagram Live videos are not Stories and are not supported.

Device guides

Saving Stories on different devices

Photo Stories save as images and video Stories as videos.

Android phones

The file goes to Downloads. Open the Files app or check the Downloads album in your Gallery.

iPhone and iPad

Safari saves to Files → Downloads. For a video Story, open it and tap share → Save Video. For a photo Story, press and hold the image → Save to Photos.

Windows computers

Open Instagram in your browser, click the Story and copy the address bar while it plays. The saved file goes to Downloads.

Mac computers

Copy the Story address from Safari or Chrome while it plays. The downloaded file is in Downloads.

Your device may use slightly different names for these folders and buttons.

Quality and formats

Story quality and file formats

Formats: video Stories are saved as MP4 and photo Stories as JPG.

Resolution: Stories are vertical (9:16). Instagram usually serves them at up to 1080 × 1920 pixels. You receive the version Instagram provides, without changes.

What is included: text and drawings that the creator added directly onto the Story are usually part of the file. Interactive stickers — like polls, questions, quizzes and link stickers — are often separate layers in the app and may not appear in the downloaded file. Music added with a music sticker may also be missing from some downloads.

Length: each Story clip is short (up to about 60 seconds), so files are usually small and download quickly.

Privacy and security

Privacy when saving Stories

  • The Story link is sent to our server and to the download service that finds the media. We do not keep a history of the links you paste.
  • Results are cached for about 5 minute(s), then removed.
  • Files pass through our server to your browser and are not stored.
  • Because the tool doesn’t use your Instagram account, your username is not added to the Story’s viewer list by this download.

Full details are in the Privacy Policy.

Responsible use

Be thoughtful with Stories

Stories feel temporary, and people often share personal moments in them. Save Stories for your own use, or keep your own Stories as a backup. Never repost someone’s Story without asking them first. Respect copyright, Instagram’s rules and local privacy laws.

Explained

How Instagram Stories work

Understanding a few basics about Stories helps you know when a download will work:

  • The 24-hour rule. A Story is visible for 24 hours from the moment it is posted. After that, it disappears for viewers.
  • The owner’s archive. The person who posted the Story can still see it in their private archive, and can add it to a Highlight at any time.
  • Each Story item is separate. When someone posts five photos to their Story, each one has its own link. That is why you copy the link of the exact item you want.
  • Audience settings. A Story can be public, visible only to followers (on private accounts) or visible only to a Close Friends list.
  • Sharing can be turned off. Some accounts hide the share option, which also hides the Copy link button.

In short: the Story must be public, it must still be online, and you need the link of that specific Story item.

For your own Stories

Keeping your own Stories safe

If you post Stories yourself, you don’t always need a downloader. Instagram has a built-in archive that keeps your old Stories privately. You can also turn on Save story to gallery in your Story settings so every new Story is saved to your phone automatically.

A downloader is handy when you are on another device, when you forgot to save a Story, or when you want a copy of a public Story from your business account to use in a report. Whatever the reason, it is a good idea to back up important Stories to cloud storage so they are not lost if your phone breaks.
