The basics

What is an Instagram Reels Downloader?

Reels are the short, vertical videos you see in the Reels tab, in the feed and on profiles. They can be a few seconds long or several minutes, and most of them have music or a voice-over. An Instagram Reels downloader is an online tool that saves a public Reel as a normal video file on your device.

Inside Instagram you can only “save” a Reel to a private list. That is just a bookmark. It needs the internet, it only works in the app, and it disappears if the creator removes the Reel. With Insta Video Download you keep the actual MP4 file. It plays offline, in any video player, and it stays on your device until you delete it.

Who finds it useful?

  • Reel creators who post straight from their phone and want a safe copy of their own work.
  • People learning new skills — cooking, fitness, makeup, language or study tips — who want to follow along without a connection.
  • Travellers who want something to watch on a plane or in places with weak signal.
  • Marketing teams who keep copies of their own brand Reels for reports and planning meetings.

The downloader works only with Reels that are public. It is a tool for offline watching and for keeping content you own or have permission to save — not a way to copy other people’s work.

Key features

Why use this Reels downloader?

A short list of things it really does — nothing more.

No app needed

Everything happens in your browser. There is nothing to install and no extension to add.

Made for phones

Most people watch Reels on a phone, so the page is built for one-hand use on small screens — and it works on tablets and computers too.

Just paste the link

Copy the Reel link in Instagram, paste it here and press Download. No menus to learn.

Public Reels supported

Any public Reel with a link that contains /reel/ can be processed.

Sound included

The MP4 keeps the Reel’s audio track. If you only want the sound, use the Audio Downloader.

MP4 format

Reels are saved as MP4 in their vertical 9:16 shape, ready to play on any device.

No account

You don’t register, log in or share your e-mail.

Free

Using the tool is free. Very fast repeated requests are slowed down briefly so the service stays quick for everyone.

Cover image too

Want the Reel’s cover picture? Paste the same link into the Thumbnail Downloader.

Step by step

How to download Instagram Reels

Six quick steps from Instagram to your camera roll.

  1. Open the Reel in Instagram

Find the Reel you want in the Reels tab, the feed or a profile.

  2. Copy the Reel link

Tap the paper-plane icon or the three dots (⋯) and choose Copy link.

  3. Open this downloader

Switch to your browser and open this page. The download box is at the top.

  4. Paste the link

Tap the box and paste, or press Paste to insert the link from your clipboard.

  5. Press Download

Press Download and wait a few seconds while the Reel is prepared.

  6. Save the Reel

Press the download button under the preview. The MP4 file is saved by your browser.

Instagram sometimes moves or renames buttons. Depending on your phone and app version you may see a paper-plane icon, “Share” or three dots (⋯). A Reel can only be saved if it is public and our download service can reach it.

Supported content

Which Reels and videos can you save?

Not every Reel can be downloaded. This list shows what to expect.

  • Public Reels Supported

Reels from public accounts, with links like instagram.com/reel/….

  • Public video posts Supported

Normal feed videos also work here. The Instagram Video Downloader is made for them.

  • Remixes and collabs Conditional

Usually work when the Reel itself is public. In some remixes the saved file shows only what Instagram serves as one video.

  • Reels with muted music Conditional

If Instagram removed the music for copyright reasons, the downloaded file will also be silent.

  • Stories and Highlights Conditional

These are not Reels. Use the Story Downloader for live public Stories, and the Highlights tool when it is available on this site.

  • Private or age-restricted Reels Not supported

Reels that need a login to view cannot be downloaded. We do not ask for logins.

Device guides

Saving Reels on different devices

Here is where your Reel ends up after you press download.

Android phones

In Chrome or Samsung Internet, the Reel is saved to the Downloads folder. A small download message appears at the bottom of the screen — tap Open to watch it.

To find it later, open Files or My Files → Downloads. It usually appears in your Gallery too.

iPhone and iPad

In Safari, tap Download if a pop-up asks. Tap the blue download arrow in the address bar to see the file.

The Reel is in the Files app → Downloads. To add it to Photos, open it, tap the share icon and pick Save Video.

Windows computers

The MP4 goes to your Downloads folder. Because Reels are vertical, they will show black bars in landscape players — that is normal.

You can open the file in the Photos app, VLC or a video editor.

Mac computers

Safari and Chrome save the Reel to Downloads. Open it with QuickTime Player, or drag it into iMovie or Final Cut if it is your own content.

Folder names and browser menus change from time to time, so your screen may look slightly different.

Quality and formats

Reel quality and file format

File type: every Reel is saved as an MP4 video with sound.

Size and shape: Reels are vertical (9:16). Instagram usually streams them at up to 1080 × 1920 pixels. You get the best version Instagram provides for that Reel. When the download service returns two versions, a smaller second option may also be shown.

Why some Reels look soft: Instagram compresses Reels when they are uploaded, especially if they were filmed in low light or sent over a slow connection. The downloaded file is the same as Instagram’s copy, so it can’t be sharper than the original. We never stretch the video or add a watermark.

What is not in the file: captions, like and comment buttons, and the Instagram progress bar are part of the app, not the video. Text and stickers that the creator added inside the Reel editor are usually part of the video and will appear.

Typical file size: a 30-second Reel is often 3–10 MB. A long Reel can be much larger.

Troubleshooting

Reel not downloading? Try this

These fixes solve most problems. Some Reels simply can’t be downloaded.

  • Invalid Instagram URLCopy the link again with Copy link. Links to a profile or to an audio page are not Reel links.
  • Download button does nothingReload the page. Turn off ad blockers for this site and make sure JavaScript is on.
  • Private or unavailable ReelIf the Reel needs a login or shows “page isn’t available”, it can’t be saved.
  • Reel does not loadWait a moment and try again. Busy servers or very fast repeated tries can cause short delays.
  • Unsupported post typeFor photos, Stories or profile pictures, use the matching tool from the list below.
  • Low qualityPick the first download option. Low quality usually comes from the original upload.
  • Can’t find the fileCheck the Downloads folder or the Files app. On iPhone, use Save Video to move it to Photos.
  • Network or browser issuesSwitch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, update your browser, or try another browser.

How your data is handled

Here is what happens behind the scenes when you download a Reel:

  • The Reel link is sent to our server and to the download service we use to look up the video. We do not keep a history of the links you paste.
  • The result is stored in a short cache for about 5 minute(s), then removed.
  • The video passes through our server to your browser while you download it. It is not kept on our server.
  • Your “Recent downloads” list lives only in your own browser.
  • You never log in, and we never ask for your Instagram password.

Read the Privacy Policy for the full details about cookies, statistics and how long data is kept.

Responsible use

Use downloaded Reels fairly

Reels are made by real people, and many of them earn a living from views. Please keep downloads for personal viewing, or save your own Reels as a backup. Before you repost, edit or share someone else’s Reel outside Instagram, ask the creator and give clear credit. Music in Reels is often licensed only for use on Instagram.

Always follow Instagram’s terms and the laws in your country. Insta Video Download is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Instagram or Meta.

Good to know

Reels or normal videos — which tool should you use?

Reels and normal video posts look similar, but Instagram treats them a little differently. Reels are always vertical, they appear in the Reels tab and they often use music from Instagram’s library. Normal video posts appear in the feed and on the profile grid, and they can be square, vertical or wide.

Both kinds can be downloaded with Insta Video Download. If your link contains /reel/, use this page. If it contains /p/, the Instagram Video Downloader is the best choice. Either tool gives you the same MP4 file, so you don’t need to worry if you paste a link into the “wrong” one.

A small tip: if you want to keep many Reels for learning, make a folder on your phone called “Saved Reels” and move each file there after you download it. It is much easier to find a video later than scrolling through the Reels tab again.
